After the successful defense of Vienna against the Turks in 1683, Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I went on a campaign against the Turkish forces. His goal was to drive the Turks east and reclaim the areas they had overrun in Hungary. The reverse of this medal depicts Leopold’s taking of the fortress at Gran (modern-day Esztergom in Hungary), which had been occupied by the Turks for nearly a century.
