John V, VII, or VIII Palaeologus. Circa 1341-1448. PB Seal (34mm, 17.60 g, 12h). Christ standing facing on low thokos, extending hand in benediction and holding Gospels; IC - XC across upper field / John standing facing, holding cruciform scepter and akakia; Iω/ ΔЄ/CΠO/THC/ OΠ/A to left, [...]ΛЄ/OΛ/ΓO to right. Unpublished in the standard references. Near VF, light roughness. A rare and interesting late imperial seal.

It is difficult to determine which John Palaeologus to assign this seal to. A similar seal in gold (and also titling the emperor αύτοκράτωρ) was in the Zacos collection (BLS I 1328 bis), but this can be linked to John VIII by a shared siglum between the seal and the emperor’s coinage, and a more precise identification is hindered by the fairly standard imperial iconography on seals of the period.
