CN. POMPEY MAGNUS (Pompey the Great). Circa 43-36 BC. Æ As (18.04 gm). Spanish or Sicilian mint. Laureate head of Janus with the features of Cn. Pompeius Magnus / Prow of galley right. Crawford 479/1; Sear,
CRI 336; Sydenham 1044; RPC I 671. VF, dark green patina. ($300)
This type is traditionally assigned to Spain during the period 45-44 BC, but in fact, the issue is more likely to have been struck in Sicily after Sextus Pompey's arrival in 43 BC; the edges are rounded unlike the straight edges of the pieces certainly struck in Spain, and the style of this issue varies considerably suggesting that there may have been several mints involved in its production.
