288, Lot: 746. Estimate $300.
Sold for $425. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

Fragmentary bronze ring with portrait of Arsinoe II or Berenike II. Hellenistic, 3rd-2nd centuries BC. Oval bezel with relief portrait of queen (Arsinoe II or Berenike II), draped and with melon coiffure. Height of bezel: 2.9cm; weight: 16.51g. J. Spier, Ancient gems and finger rings: catalogue of the collections, the J. Paul Getty Museum (Malibu, CA: 1992), no. 88. Grayish-green patina. Hoop missing, bezel with some peripheral chipping.

Spier notes that such rings were probably made for officials spread throughout the territories held by the Ptolemies, and that many are probably later than the time of Arsinoe or Berenike. See p. 48 of the Getty catalogue for bibliography.
