JUDAEA, Herodians. Agrippa II, with Domitian. Circa 50-100 CE. Æ (25mm, 9.55 g, 12h). Caesarea Maritima (or Rome?) mint. Dated RY 25 of Agrippa’s first era (84/5 CE). [IMP CAES] DIVI VESP F DOMITIAN [AVG GER COS X], laureate head right / SALVTI EΠI BA AΓPI AVGVST, square altarl ET - KE (date) across field. Meshorer 154; Hendin 1319; RPC II 2266. Fine/VF, earthen black patina. Interesting bilingual issue.
A peculiar issue imitating Roman ases but with legends in Latin and Greek. Hendin (p. 307) notes: “Some theories suggest that these coins were minted in Rome, others suggest that the dies were made there or locally by Roman artisans and struck at Caesarea Maritima.”
