GAUL, Southern. Uncertain tribe. Late 2nd-mid 1st century BC. AR Denarius (19mm, 4.03 g, 12h). Head of Roma left, wearing winged helmet; X (mark of value) to right / The Dioscuri on horseback right, holding couched lances; carnyx below, retrograde NYKI in exergue. Unpublished. Good VF, toned.
Although unpublished, the style and types are quite similar to the Celtic coinage of southern Gaul that was influenced by the Roman Republican coinage. The appearance of the carnyx, which was a Gallic instrument, also suggests an origin among the tribes of Gaul.
