THESSALY, Larissa. Circa 460s BC or circa 440-400 BC. AR Hemiobol (9mm, 0.40 g, 12h). Head of Jason right, wearing petasos / Λ-A-P-I (the P retrograde) around, head and neck of bridled horse right; all within incuse square. J. Kagan, “The so-called Persian weight coins of Larissa,” Obolos 7 p. 81 and pl. 1, 6 (this coin); BCD Thessaly II 145 (same dies; hammer of $3500). Near VF/Fine, toned, a bit porous. Extremely rare - the second known example of this only recently published type.

From the BCD Collection.

According to Kagan (p. 81), this issue provides a link between the “sandal of Jason” and “taurokathapsia” issues. A date of “second quarter of 5th century BC” was given for the other known example in BCD Thessaly II, but in an accompanying note BCD leaned toward a later date. This is supported by the use of “P” rather than “R” and by the relatively shallow incuse that appears to have slightly rounded corners.
