KINGS of MACEDON. temp. Perseus. 179-168 BC. AR Drachm (15mm, 2.77 g, 12h). Imitation of Rhodes struck during the Third Macedonian War, circa 171/0 BC. Mint in northern mainland Greece. Aristokrates, magistrate. Head of Helios facing slightly right / Rose with bud to right; [AP]IΣTOKΡΑΤΗΣ above, club to left. Ashton, Clubs 79 (A20/P27 – this coin). Good VF, lightly toned.


Ex “1992(?) Thessalonike Area(?) Hoard” (CH VIII, 426).

One of a series of Rhodian-style drachms struck during the Third Macedonian War. The reason for their striking was prompted by the presence of large numbers of Cretan mercenaries in northern mainland Greece during Perseus’ campaigns against the Roman army.
