PTOLEMAIC KINGS of EGYPT. Berenike II, wife of Ptolemy III. Circa 244/3-221 BC. Æ (21mm, 6.91 g, 12h). Gaza or Ioppa(?) mint. Struck circa 224-222 BC. Diademed head right / Eagle with closed wings standing left on thunderbolt. Svoronos 1055; SNG Copenhagen 460. Fine, black desert patina. Rare.
What appears to be a control resembling “Λ” in the left field of the reverse may simply be a die break. Only the smaller denominations for Berenike are known to carry a control (“EY”, which is clearly not on this coin).
