From the Peter Moffat Collection. Ex Christie’s (14 April 1981), lot 126; 1847 Bolton Percy Hoard.
Discovered in a field near the bank of the River Wharfe in Yorkshire, the 1847 Bolton Percy Hoard contained approximately 2000 bronze coins of the mid 9th century. An additional 1800 coins were discovered in 1967 and likely formed part of the large cache. We can only speculate on the circumstances of the burial of some 4000 Northumbrian bronzes, but a Viking attack on the region in 866 provides a possibly clue.
