ISLANDS off THRACE, Thasos. Circa 360 BC. Didrachm (Silver, 7.13 g 7). Bearded head of Dionysos to right, wearing wreath of ivy leaves with berries at his forehead. Rev. ΘΑΣΙΟΝ Herakles, wearing lion-skin headdress and short, hunting chiton, kneeling right, shooting his bow; to right, ΜΕ (in ligature) and burning race torch . E.S.G. Robinson, “A Find of Coins of Thasos”, NC 1934, 33 = SNG Lockett 1226 (this coin). Rare. Nicely toned and very well struck, one of the finest known examples of this type. Some unimportant traces of die rust in the fields, otherwise, about extremely fine.

From the Spina Collection, and from the Outstanding Collection, Leu 81, 16 May 2001, 141, from the collection of R. C. Lockett, Glendining & Co., 12 February 1958, 1143 and from the Thrace Hoard of 1934 (IGCH 716).

This coin is slightly later than the gold drachm: it lacks any trace of an incuse on the reverse and the style is marginally freer.
