THRACO-MACEDONIAN TRIBES, Orreskioi. Circa 500-480 BC. Stater (Silver, 8.98 g). Centaur galloping to right, carrying off nymph whose right hand is raised in protest. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square. HPM pl. VI, 17 (same obverse die). SNG ANS 980 (same obverse die). Rare and of unusually fine style. Nicely toned. With an insignificant flan crack, otherwise, about extremely fine.

From the Spina Collection, ex Triton V, 15 January 2002, 1271.

The obverse of this coin differs from most of the other staters of the Orreskioi by both being of appreciably better workmanship (as with other northern Greek tribal coinages the usual pieces of the Orreskioi are almost ostentatiously rude in style) and by lacking the usual ethnic. This coin also has the look of one from a collection much older than its first known auction appearance; unfortunately this earlier pedigree has yet to be found.
