KINGS of MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’. 336-323 BC. Distater (Gold, 22mm, 17.18 g 7), Amphipolis, c. 330-320. Head of Athena to right, wearing earring, necklace and Corinthian helmet adorned with a serpent.
Rev. ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ Nike moving slowly to left, on tiptoes, her wings spread, holding stylis over her left shoulder with her left hand and wreath in her outstretched right; to left, kantharos. Price 167. Clear, well centered and with a fascinating reverse. Extremely fine.
From the Mieza collection, purchased privately in 2004.
This lovely distater bears a variant Nike of excellent style. Normally she is just standing and holding her wreath and stylis; on this piece she is actually walking to the left in order to crown the victor. Perhaps we can visualize her as having just flown down and landed. It is a lovely concept!
