IONIA, Phokaia. Circa 387-326 BC. Hekte (Electrum, 2.52 g), c. 380-360. Head of youthful Pan to left, with goat’s horn and animal ear; behind, here off the flan, seal swimming upwards.
Rev. Quadripartite incuse square. Bodenstedt 73 (b/γ). SNG von Aulock 7950. An attractive piece with an intriguing, almost ferocious head of Pan. Good very fine.
From the Spina Collection, ex Gemini VI, 10 January 2010, 188.
Compare this youthful head of Pan with that on the Kyzikene stater (above lot 119) - here we have a rustic, elemental creature, but at Kyzikos he is much more refined and civilized.
