Caracalla. AD 198-217. Denarius (Silver, 2.96 g 7), Rome, early 212. ANTONINVS PIVS AVG BRIT Laureate and bearded head of Caracalla to right.
Rev. P M TR P XV COS III P P Elephant walking to right, its body and legs covered by net-like armor or padding. BMC 47. Cohen 208. RIC 199. Toned. About extremely fine.
The elephant probably refers to public games held early in 212, especially given that it wears this net-like covering, which must be a kind of armor. Similar representations appear under Antoninus Pius and also refer to games.
