BAKTRIA, Indo-Greek Kingdom. Artemidoros Aniketos. Circa 100-80 BC. AR Drachm (17mm, 2.28 g, 12h). Diademed and draped bust right / Artemis standing left, drawing bow; monogram to left. Bopearachchi 3B; Bopearachchi & Rahman –; SNG ANS 1275 (same dies); Senior H1.9D. Good VF, minor deposits, struck with slightly rusty dies, tiny scratch on obverse, slight die shift on reverse. Extremely rare and the first to be offered at auction in recent memory.
Bopearachchi recorded only two specimens: one in the BN (Inv. FRBNF41759594); the other in the ANS (1944.100.74815). The ANS specimen, purchased from the Kreling Collection (Schulman, 24 November 1913, lot 875 [there listed as a hemidrachm]), was donated to the Society by E.T. Newell.
