Q. Pomponius Rufus. 70 BC. AR Denarius (17mm, 3.52 g, 7h). Rome mint. Laureate head of Jupiter right / Eagle perched on scepter left, head right, holding wreath; fish to right, V below. Debernardi 46 (O8/R5 – this coin); Crawford 398/1; Sydenham 793; Pomponia 23. Near VF, toned, porous, banker’s mark and a pair of scratches on obverse. Rare.
Ex Lanz 121 (22 November 2004), Lot 287.
One of the rarest moneyers of Roman Republican denarii. Apart from his coins, nothing is known about him. Curiously, this reverse type may have served as the model for the later gold staters of the dynast Coson.
