Maurice Tiberius. 582-602. Æ Decanummium (14mm, 2.73 g, 8h). Carthage mint. Struck circa 597/8-602. Helmeted and cuirassed facing bust / Large X; cross above, N M flanking (pellets above and below each letter), star below. DOC –; MIBE –; SB –. VF, dark brown patina, some green, minor flan flaws on obverse. Apparently unpublished.

From the Bramhall Collection. Ex Robert Bridge Collection, with his ticket.

A similar type, but without the N M and associated pellets, is known for Maurice (MIBE V124D). As the N M-with-pellets marking was first used durign the final issues of Maurice at Carthage (MIBE N117D, 121D, 125Da-b, and 130D), and this exact reverse type is known for Carthage decanummii of the succeeding reign of Phocas (MIBE 100) and the Revolt of the Heraclii (MIBE 13²), it is likely that the present issue was struck near the end of Maurice’s reign.
