MOESIA, Kallatis. 3rd-2nd centuries BC. AR Drachm (17mm, 5.33 g, 12h). Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Grain ear, club, and bow in bow case; monogram to lower left. AMNG I 198.2 = SNG BM Black Sea 201 corr.; AMNG I 198.3 = Mionnet Supp. II 1 corr. Good VF, lightly toned.

The control on this issue has been variously described in AMNG, Mionnet, and both BMC catalogs. Mionnet first identified it as an E, while AMNG and BMC Thrace described it as a monogram. The recent BMC catalog revised the description, and followed Mionnet’s reading of an E. This recent BMC catalog, interestingly, is the only one of these books that has an example that is illustrated, and its control clearly is a match with that on the present coin, which shows it is indeed a monogram.
