PTOLEMAIC KINGS of EGYPT. Ptolemy V Epiphanes(?). 204-180 BC. Æ Diobol (25mm, 18.87 g, 11h). Kyrene mint. Diademed head of Ptolemy I right, wearing aegis around neck / Draped bust of Libya right; branch behind, cornucopia below chin. Svoronos –; SNG Copenhagen –; Weiser 102; Asolati –. VF, green patina, light earthen encrustation. Rare.

Weiser assigns the coin to Ptolemy V, specifically to circa 204 BC, although many of his attributions have not been widely accepted. The coin is stylistically similar to other coins generally given to Ptolemy III. Weiser also refers to the left reverse symbol as an “apple branch”. A crude silphium plant is another possibility.
