Middle Kingdom. 12th Dynasty. Amenemhet II (circa 1929-1895 BC). Steatite scaraboid (14x8mm). Base engraved with the throne name of Amenhemet II, Nubkaure (“Golden are the Souls of Re”). Intact, blue glaze preserved, pierced for mounting. A beautiful and neatly engraved piece. Most likely a New Kingdom reissue.
From the David Hendin Collection.
Amenemhet (“Amun is at the Head”) was the son of Senusret and the third king of the 12th Dynasty. Not much is known of his long reign although he must have continued the work of his predecessors in foreign affairs as there are records of increased relationships with the Levant. Jewelry bearing his cartouche was found in the Byblos royal tombs and expeditions are recorded to the Land of Punt and to the Red Sea. Amenemhet’s pyramid was built at Dashur, near the site of an earlier King of the 4th Dynasty, Snefru.
