Nero. AD 54-68. Æ Sestertius (34mm, 23.96 g, 2h). Uncertain Balkan mint. Laureate head right / Triumphal arch surmounted by statue of emperor in quadriga in procession. RIC I –; RPC I 1758 var. (obv. legend); MacDowall, “Two Roman Countermarks of AD 68,” NC (1960), p. 107, 1 var. (same); CNG e287, lot 410 (same dies). Fine, brown patina, light roughness, spot of active green corrosion on reverse.

Recent scholarship suggests that such Balkan imitations were struck at Perinthus. Provenance, when known, is almost always in the northwest Balkan area. In addition, the coins are frequently encountered countermarked with Galban stamps (ΓAL KAI and GALBA) that were used to countermark provincial issues of Perinthus.
