temp. HANOVER. Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson, 1st Viscount Nelson. 1758-1805. Æ Medal (41mm, 36.54 g, 12h). The Battle of Trafalgar. By T. Webb and J. P. Droz. Dated 1805, but struck circa 1820. Bare head left / Bellona standing right on prow of galley, wielding thunderbolt and holding trident. BHM 596; Eimer 963. EF, brown surfaces, a few light marks and tiny reverse die breaks.
Struck by James Mudie, perhaps initially intended for but not included in his medallic series of British Victories. It appears that Mudie found this obverse to be unsatisfactory and ultimately settled on the three-quarter facing bust seen on the previous lot.
