Sir John Moore joined the British army in 1776. He served in the American War of Independance and the Irish Rebellion of 1798, in addition to holding numerous posts in West Indies and throughout the Mediterranean. Moore is best remembered, however, as an exceptional trainer of troops and for his role in the Battle of Corunna. Sent to Spain with goal of expelling the French, Moore was forced to retreat through dangerous mountainous terrain to Corunna in the winter of 1809, from where the British troops were planning to flee Spain. The French caught up with him at Corunna shortly before disembarking and a battle ensued. Moore was mortally wounded in the engagement, but survived long enough to learn that the British forces were able to fend off the French.
