Justinian I. 527-565. Æ Follis (31mm, 19.97 g, 6h). Contemporary imitation of an Antioch mint issue struck 527-528, 1st “officina”. Diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Large M; stars flanking; A//ANTIX. DOC 202a; MIBE 125; SB 213. Near VF, brown patina, scratches on reverse.

From the Bramhall Collection.

In late 528, an earthquake nearly destroyed Antioch. It was re-christened Theoupolis (“City of God”), and afterward coins bear that name rather than Antioch.

The unusual portrait style, peculiar legend, lack of cross above the M, and uncharacteristic squarish flan all point to this being an unofficial issue.
