CILICIA, Tarsus. Pseudo-autonomous issue. temp. Hadrian, AD 117-138, or later. Æ (15mm, 2.50 g, 7h). TAP-COY, Zeus Nicephorus seated left / MH-TP-O-Π-O, club within oak wreath. SNG France –; SNG Levante –; BMC –; SNG von Aulock –. Good VF, dark brown patina.

From the Kelly J. Krizan, M.D. Collection. Ex Classical Numismatic Group 49 (17 March 1999), lot 972.

The city coinage of Tarsos is well published and the “Zeus / club” type is very common. Typically, the obverse legend is TAPΣΕΩN, and MHTPOΠO is written with various monograms (see SNG France 1354-1372). This coin, however, uses the legend TAPCOY, which was not used until the time of Hadrian and later, thus the 2nd century dating for this coin.
