IONIA, Ephesos. Circa 166-67 BC. AR Drachm (16mm, 2.94 g, 11h). Cistophoric type. Struck circa 134-1 BC. Lion’s skin draped over club / Grape bunch; ΕΦΕ to lower left, torch to right. Cf. Kleiner-Noe Series 40; cf. SNG von Aulock 1859. VF, bright surfaces. Rare.


Possibly an unrecorded variety, this coin has the torch symbol that is found on K-N Series 40, but lacks the bee that is normally above the grape cluster. Also, above the ΕΦΕ is a previously engraved control mark, or perhaps another ΕΦΕ, that has been partially erased from the die
