MACEDON, Chalkidian League. Circa 400-385 BC. AR Tetradrachm (22mm, 14.41 g, 3h). Olynthos mint. Head of Apollo left, wearing laurel wreath / Kithara; X-A-Λ-KIΔ-EΩN around; all within incuse square. Robinson & Clement Groups E–G (unpublished dies); SNG ANS –; CNG 73, lot 120 var. (small E on kithara; same obv. die); CNG 72, lot 229 var. (same ; same obv. die). Good VF, bright surfaces. Well centered. Rare unpublished issue.

As with the CNG 72 and 73 pieces, this unpublished issue shares stylistic affinities with Robinson & Clement’s earliest tetradrachm groups. The style of the obverse is most similar to their Group E tetradrachms, particularly in the rendering of the eye and hair. At the same time, the CNG 72 and 73 pieces have a small letter E on an upright of the kithara. Similar control markings are only known for Groups G, I, and J. While the style of Groups I and J are not compatible with the new issues, the style found on Group G dies is similar. Nonetheless, the control letter found on Group G coins is only known from a single reverse die, so such an isolated occurrence could also be possible for Group E, or even Group F, which has some dies that are also consistent with the style found on the new coins.
