ARGOLIS, Argos. Circa 420/10 BC. AR Hemiobol (6mm, 0.44 g). Rosette with six petals / Corinthian helmet right within incuse square. BCD Peloponnesos 1037 = Weber 4173 (this coin); BMC 31 = Traité III 614, pl. CCXV, 10. VF, toned. Extremely rare.
From the Daniel Koppersmith Collection. Ex BCD Collection (LHS 96, 8 May 2006), lot 1037; Sir Hermann Weber Collection, 4173; Sir Hyman Montagu Collection (Sotheby, Wilkinson and Hodge, 15 March 1897), lot 474(?).
The Weber catalog notes that the coin was acquired from the 1897 Montagu sale, but does not specify a lot. The coin was presumably included in one of the small number of group lots. Lot 474, a lot of 65 “Greek AR, principally of small denominations, some unattributed” would seem to be the only logical fit.
