KINGS of BITHYNIA. Nikomedes III Euergetes. 127-94 BC. AR Tetradrachm (36mm, 16.92 g, 11h). Dated 195 BE (102/3 BC). Diademed head right / Zeus Stephanophoros standing left; to inner left, eagle standing left on thunderbolt above monogram above Γ(koppa)P (date). Callataÿ p. 58, D100/R3, a = Thompson p. 505, B, pl. 184, B (this coin); RG 40; SNG von Aulock –; HGC 6, 642; DCA 444. Good VF, toned, struck from worn obverse die.

From the Demetrios Armounta Collection. Ex 1954 Poggio Picenze (“Abruzzi”) Hoard (IGCH 2056).

Probably due to the poor pencil rubbing of this coin illustrated in Thompson, Callataÿ does not note that the obverse die has been re-engraved before striking this coin, obviously in an attempt to increase the die’s lifespan.
