IONIA, Uncertain. Circa 650-600 BC. EL Hemitetarte – Eighth Stater (9mm, 2.08 g). Samian-Euboeic standard. Plain type. Plain globular surface / Bipartite incuse square. Unpublished, but see Triton VIII, lots 438-440 for the bipartite subgroup. VF, as made. Possibly unique.
From the Daniel Koppersmith Collection.
The present coin is a new addition to the subgroup of bipartite incuse issues on the Samian-Euobeic standard, as listed in Triton VIII. This small series thus far consists of the stater, hemistater, tetarte, and now, hemitetarte. The tetarte was misidentified in Triton VIII as a trite (see Triton X, lot 317 for reevaluation of Samian-Euboeic ‘trites’ to ‘tetartes’).
