CNG 94, Lot: 695. Estimate $300.
Sold for $180. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

ASIA MINOR, Uncertain. Circa 5th century BC. AR Hemidrachm or Triobol(?) (10mm, 2.16 g). Forepart of horse left / Irregular quadripartite incuse. Cf. Schönert-Geiss 4-5; cf. CNG E-282, lot 101 (horse right); cf. CNG E-239, lot 164 (horse right, described as electrum); cf. Noble 92, lot 5055 (horse right, Maroneia); cf. Elektron I 1 (head only, electrum, Maroneia). Near VF, granular surfaces.

This curious pale silver issue is struck on the thick, globular flan often associated with late figural electrum. The attribution is uncertain; Schönert-Geiss has published similar specimens as tetrobols of the earliest issues at Maroneia, while find spots seem to indicate an origin in Asia Minor.
