PHOENICIA, Tyre. 126/5 BC-AD 65/6. AR Shekel (23mm, 14.21 g, 1h). Illegible date, struck early 1st century AD. Laureate bust of Melkart right, lion skin around neck / Eagle standing left on prow; palm frond in background; to left, illegible date above club; to right, KP above monogram; Phoenician B between legs. Cf. C. Meir, “Tyrian
Sheqels from the ‘Isfiya Hoard, Part Three: ‘Crude Style’” in
INR 7 (2012), pp. 25–30. Good VF, lightly toned.
It is possible the intended date is CY 126 (1 BC – AD 1), due to the similarity in style of this piece to a shekel in the ‘Isfiya hoard with the same control letters and monogram (cf. C. Meir, “Tyrian Sheqels from the ‘Isfiya Hoard, Part One” in INR 4 [2009], 14).
