EGYPT, Alexandria. Hadrian. AD 117-138. Æ Drachm (34mm, 24.37 g, 12h). Dated RY 18 (AD 133/4). Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Egyptian sphinx with Uraeus tail standing left on serpent, wearing composite cronwn and crocodile pectoral plate; on its back, griffin standing left, with forepaw on wheel; L–IH (date) across field. Köln 1132; Dattari (Savio) 2004; K&G 32.597; Emmet 1056. Fine, brown surfaces. Interesting type.

This type appears to be rarer than indicated in Emmet, where it is given an “R1” rating. There is only one example of this type in CoinArchives – the variety with reverse type to right – and only one example with reverse type to left was in Dattari’s large and mostly complete collection.
