MAURETANIA, Babba. temp. Augustus, 27 BC-AD 14. Æ As(?) (23mm, 10.40 g, 12h). C. M. Ambatus, praefectus, and Ax(ilius?) Vac– and A. Te(rentius?) Tiro, aediles. Struck circa 19 BC(?). Head of Bacchus right / Head of female (Ceres?) right between two grain kernels or amphorae. M. Amandry, “Notes de numismatique Africaine, I,” RN (1984), p. 89, type b, 1-3 (D1/R1); RPC 869 (same dies as illustration); SNG Copenhagen 752 (Uncertain mint) = FITA pl. VI, 14 (Zama Regia; same dies). Near VF, dark grayish-green patina. Extremely rare, only five cited in RPC for this type (4 in original publication, 1 in Supplement II) and 9 total for the entire mint. An important opportunity for the collector of North African provincials.
