New Issue for Maximianus

CNG 94, Lot: 1204. Estimate $1000.
Sold for $3000. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

Maximianus. First reign, AD 286-305. AR Argenteus (17mm, 3.20 g, 12h). Antioch mint, 1st officina. 1st emission, circa AD 294-295. MAXIMIAN VS AVG, laureate head right / VICTORIAE SARMATICAE, four tetrarchs sacrificing over tripod before city enclosure with four turrets; *-A//ANT. RIC VI –, but cf. 32 (Diocletian [Γ officina only]) and 33a (Constantius [B officina only] and 33b (Galerius [H officina only]) and p. 600, section (i); RSC –; cf. CNG 85, lot 1165 (Diocletian; same rev. die). Superb EF, tiny edge split with minor hairline flan crack. Apparently unique.

RIC notes that no first emission issues of Antioch with the VICTORIAE SARMATICAE reverse are known for Maximianus. To date, the only other known example of the A officina for this issue is the CNG 85 coin for Diocletian.
