NORMAN. William I 'the Conqueror'. 1066-1087. AR Penny (19mm, 1.32 g, 9h). Paxs type (BMC viii). Tantune (Taunton) mint; Ælfwine, moneyer. Struck circa 1083-1086. + PILLEL(M R)EX, crowned facing bust, holding scepter; trefoil over right shoulder, pellet over left / + IELFPINE ON TIIN, cross pattée; letters of P Λ X S in annulets within quarters. SCBI 55 (Hermitage), 73 (same obv. die); BMC 1000 (same dies); North 848; SCBC 1257. VF, toned, some minor striking weakness. Very rare.
