CILICIA, Ninica-Claudiopolis. Maximinus I. AD 235-238. Æ (25mm, 7.76 g, 6h). Laureate head right; c/m: Δ with central annulet within circlular border within incuse circle and uncertain design / Two vexilla. SNG France –; SNG Levante 626 (same dies); Lingren III 884 (this coin); for c/m on neck: Howgego 669. Near VF, grayish-green patina, small split on edge.

From the Kelly J. Krizan, M.D. Collection. Ex Henry CLay Lingren Collection, 884.

The uncertain countermark on Maximinus’ head resembles a crab or perhaps a tortoise. Whatever it is, it is clearly not one of the countermarks that routinely appears on the coins of Ninica.
