Augustus. 27 BC-AD 14. Æ As (27mm, 10.16 g, 6h). Rome mint; C. Gallius Lupercus, moneyer. Struck 16 BC. Bare head right; c/m: VA within rectangular incuse / Legend around large S C. RIC I 379; for c/m: Martini 119; Brunk 1041. Fine, porous brown surfaces. Very rare countermark.
The exact meaning of this countermark remains uncertain. Martini suggests that it could have been applied at the time of the Civil War of AD 68-69, with the VA standing for either V(itellius) A(ugustus) or V(espasianus) A(ugustus).
