John III Ducas (Vatatzes). Emperor of Nicaea, 1222-1254. AV Hyperpyron (26mm, 4.15 g, 6h). Second coinage. Magnesia mint. Struck circa 1232-1254. Christ Pantokrator enthroned facing; pellets at ends of throne, small cross above to left / John standing facing, holding labarum, being crowned by the Theotokos ( Virgin Mary). DOC 4c; SB 2073. Near VF, toned, graffiti on reverse.
