THRACE, Abdera. Circa 500-475 BC. AR Oktadrachm (28mm, 28.12 g). Griffin seated left, forepaw raised; M before / Quadripartite incuse square. May, Abdera, Group XIX, 39 corr. (A33/P37; M not noted on obverse); SNG Copenhagen –; Rosen 129 (same obv. die, perhaps same rev.). Fine, toned, rough surfaces. Rare.

From the Daniel Koppersmith Collection. Ex Classical Numismatic Group Electronic Auction 256 (25 May 2011), lot 4.

May does not note the M on the obverse, which was not visible on the one specimen he knew of. It is faint on the present coin, and more clearly visible on the Rosen specimen. Accordingly, the issue should belong to his group XVIII.
