LUCANIA, Metapontum. Circa 340-330 BC. Didrachm or Nomos (Silver, 20mm, 7.48 g 12), signed by the Kal... engraver. Laureate head of Zeus to right; behind head, thunderbolt. Rev. ΜΕΤΑΠΟΝ Barley ear with leaf to right; above leaf, ΚΑΛ. HN III 1558. Johnston A6.3. SNG ANS 412. Rare. Nicely toned, and with a majestic head of Zeus. Good very fine.

From the B. in B. Collection, ex Sternberg XVI, 15 November 1985, 33.

‘Kal...’ was an itinerant mint master who worked at a number of cities in Southern Italy (he is especially well known from his work at Tarentum, see above lot 9), who traveled accompanied by his own staff, including an engraver of great talent. As with many Greek painted pots, the actual name of the artist is unknown and so he is named after his patron.
