LUCANIA, Metapontum. Circa 340-330 BC. Didrachm or Nomos (Silver, 20mm, 7.48 g 12), signed by the Kal... engraver. Laureate head of Zeus to right; behind head, thunderbolt.

‘Kal...’ was an itinerant mint master who worked at a number of cities in Southern Italy (he is especially well known from his work at Tarentum, see above lot 9), who traveled accompanied by his own staff, including an engraver of great talent. As with many Greek painted pots, the actual name of the artist is unknown and so he is named after his patron.
