KINGS of THRACE. Lysimachos. 305-281 BC. Stater (Gold, 18mm, 8.45 g 11), Pella, 286/5-282/1. Head of Alexander the Great to right, with horn of Ammon over his ear.
Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΛΥΣΙΜΑΧΟΥ Athena seated left on low-backed throne, holding Nike, crowning the king’s name, in her right hand, a spear in her left, and with her left elbow resting on a shield ornamented with an aegis; to left, monogram of ΗΡ. Müller 347. Thompson -, (
but cf. 247, a tetradrachm with the same monogram in the same position; and 240, a stater with the same monogram but with an additional monogram in the exergue). A very pleasing, well-centered coin with a splendid head of Alexander. Toned and very attractive. Nearly extremely fine.
From a Swiss collection, ex Hess-Leu 22, 4 April 1963, 38.
This is a particularly appealing lifetime issue of Lysimachos. The style is elegant and the head of Alexander is beautifully modeled; this stater one of the prettiest to appear since it was last at auction.
