KINGS of MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’. 336-323 BC. Stater (Gold, 17mm, 8.64 g 3), ‘Amphipolis’, uncertain mint in Macedonia, c. 330 - c. 320 BC. Head of Athena to right, wearing Corinthian helmet adorned with a serpent.
Rev. ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ Nike standing left, holding wreath in her right hand and stylis in her left; to left, thunderbolt. Price 164. SNG Copenhagen 625. Clear and well centered. Extremely fine.
From an American collection.
Coins of this variety were traditionally ascribed to Amphipolis but this is uncertain. There seems to be good evidence that they were struck in Macedonia, but in his study Price opted for prudence and refused to make a definite attribution to a specific mint.
