KINGS of MACEDON. Demetrios I Poliorketes. 306-283 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 29mm, 17.21 g 11), Amphipolis, c. 291-290. Diademed head of Demetrios to right, wearing bull’s horn above his forehead.
Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΔΗΜΗΤΡΙΟΥ Poseidon, nude to the waist, seated left on a pile of rocks, holding aplustre in his right hand and trident with his left; to left and right, monograms. Newell 107 var. (obverse XCVII but with an unpublished reverse). For the same variety as this, but from different dies, see: Monnaies et Médailles 72, 1987, 577. A very attractive piece, darkly toned. Extremely fine.
