THESSALY, Larissa. Circa 420-400 BC. Obol (Silver, 12mm, 0.96 g 9). Horse walking to right.
Rev. ΛΑΡ - ΙΣΑ The nymph Larissa standing facing, her head turned to left, holding ball in her right hand and resting her left on her waist. BCD II, 168 and BMFA 881 (
same dies). Very rare. With a reverse beautifully engraved and very well centered. Rough surfaces,
otherwise, about extremely fine.
From a European collection, formed before 2005.
The delicacy and beauty of the figure of Larissa on the reverse of this obol must have been done by a master engraver of great talent. This may well be the best preserved example of the type known.
