PAMPHYLIA, Aspendos. Circa 380/75-330/25 BC. Stater (Silver, 23mm, 10.96 g 3). Two wrestlers beginning to grapple with each other; between them, ΔΡ.
Rev. ΕΣ]ΤFΕΔΙΙ[ΥΣ] Slinger striding right, preparing to launch sling-bolt; to right, triskeles to left above an uncertain symbol, perhaps a greave; all within rectangular frame of pearls. SNG Copenhagen 220 (
same dies). SNG von Aulock 4550 (
this coin). A lovely, bold example struck in high relief. Nicely toned. Good extremely fine.
From the B. in B. Collection, ex Bank Leu 48, 10 May 1989, 248, and from the collection of H. von Aulock.
Given how rapidly the coinage of Aspendos must have been minted, getting a well struck and very well centered piece made from fresh dies, like this one, is very difficult.
