Divus Antoninus Pius. Died AD 161. Denarius (Silver, 18mm, 3.27 g 6), struck under M. Aurelius and L. Verus, Rome, c. 161-162. DIVVS ANTONINVS Bare head of Antoninus Pius to right.
Rev. DIVO PIO The column of Antoninus Pius: a tall column, on a base surrounded by a balustrade, surmounted by a statue of the deified emperor. BMC 67 (M. Aurelius). RIC 439 (M. Aurelius). A brilliant, fresh example. Virtually as struck.
From a northern European collection.
The Column of Antoninus Pius was made of a monolithic slab of red granite and had a decorated base of white marble. The broken column and the base were rediscovered in the 18th century, and there were soon plans to re-erect it, but the column was too damaged to do so: the base is on display in the Vatican.
