Unpublished Archepolis Tetartemorion

315, Lot: 83. Estimate $200.
Sold for $360. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

IONIA, Magnesia ad Maeandrum. Archepolis. Circa 459 BC. AR Tetartemorion (5mm, 0.19 g, 11h). Head of Leukippos right, wearing crested Attic helmet / Eagle’s head left; A to upper left, M(?) to lower right; all within border of pellets within incuse square. Seemingly unpublished, but cf. Nollé & Wenninger p. 58, fig. A for similar reverse on a trihemiobol. VF, light porosity.

After Themistokles’ death (on Themistokles, see lot 79 above), his son Archepolis succeeded him as governor and issued a similar series of silver fractions. These coins are part of the primary evidence of his otherwise little-known reign.
