Research Coins: Electronic Auction

316, Lot: 350. Estimate $100.
Sold for $65. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

Uncertain. 189-180 BC. Æ As (34mm, 29.39 g, 8h). Rome mint. Laureate head of bearded Janus; I (mark of value) above / Prow of galley right; above, bull standing right and MD monogram; I (mark of value) to right. Crawford 142/1; Sydenham 299. Fine, green-brown patina that is lightly chipped around the edge.

Duplicates from the RBW Collection, acquired from Edward J. Waddell, November 1984.

The MD monogram has led some to suggest that these are the moneyer’s initials, perhaps indicating M. Durmius.
